‘Modern day slaves’ freed in Ontario

According to an article by the Ottawa Citizen, one city councillor is jumping at the idea of an OC Transpo fare freeze following a “Transit Week Challenge” which attempted to shine light on the importance of accessible transportation.
Despite not being on the Transit commission, Shaun Menard is pushing for a fare freeze in hopes that the increase, expected in July, increases ridership. This conference was held after the “Transit Week Challenge” which encouraged city councillors to take any form of transit, in order to understand the struggles of public users.

A Globe and Mail article reads, dozens of Mexican “modern day slaves”, who were working by cleaning vacation properties in Ontario for 50$ a month, were freed and offered real employment opportunities, police said Monday.
Barrie police started an investigation in 2017 after receiving multiple tips from the public. The people involved were brought to Canada under misleading circumstances and were promised “ a safer life and more opportunities.”

According to an article by The Guardian, 99 people in India have died due to alcohol containing methanol. Police suspect moonshine was to blame, as bootleggers often add the chemical to increase the strength of their product.
Multiple people across India have been arrested and some liquor has been sent for testing. Hundreds of people have died due to consuming cheap alcohol. In India, about 40 per cent of their alcohol is made illegally according to the International Spirits and Wine association of India.
