Meet your Times Advertising Team!

Ad Director

Dina Plews – Director of Advertising

Dina is a second-year Advertising and Marketing Communications Management student at Algonquin. In the future, she plans to pursue a career in accounts management and social media. Dina is currently working as a Parliament Assistant at the House of Commons and has received the Lieutenant Governor’s Award. She has a love for travel and has visited every province except Newfoundland & Labrador. This year she plans to grow The Times’ social media presence, provide excellent work for clients, and have an e-newsletter that both staff and students can actively engage with.

Sales & Promo Team

Somer Johns – Director of Accounts and Promotions

Somer is in her second year of Advertising and Marketing Communications Management at Algonquin College. Her ideal pathway would be working at an agency in the business sector. She would like to work with clients to negotiate pricing, explain what is possible and ensure that the deal benefits both parties equally. Somer has experience in both b-commerce and working as an advertiser/manager for a small business. Her passion is advocating for the environment. This year Somer plans to run her department with compassion and professionalism to assist her clients during this global crisis.

Sara Jankowski – Account Manager

Sara is in her second year of Advertising and Marketing Communications Management. She is originally from Toronto and previously went to OCAD University for drawing and painting. Her ideal career pathway would lead to her becoming a creative director.

Spencer Johnston – Account Manager

Spencer is a second-year Advertising and Marketing Communications Management student. He makes music in his spare time and helps his father in their family-owned graphic design and camera studio. Spencer has a passion for sports, and the current times have allowed him to develop a deeper connection with that subject matter. In the future, he would like to assist emerging brands or artists to gain mainstream popularity and recognition.

Eduardo Platas – Account Manager

Eduardo is in his second year of Advertising and Marketing Communications Management. He has four years of marketing experience, along with two years’ experience in hosting events. His ideal career pathway is to be an influencer as well as a graphic designer.

Caley Proulx – Account Manager

Caley is currently in her second year of Advertising and Marketing Communications Management at Algonquin College. In the future, she hopes to work in a field that involves the use of media technologies.

Creative Team

Ladawn Savard – Creative Director 

Ladawn is a second-year Advertising and Marketing Communications Management Student. After graduation, she plans to pursue a career in the creative field for the government. Ladawn is originally from Gatineau, Quebec. Her passion for the advertising industry started at a young age due to the decision to take a Media Studies course in high school. This year, Ladawn plans to create ads that will help her team to enhance their skills and knowledge.

Lauren Kopetoske- Events/Contests Creator and Copywriter 

Lauren is in her second year at Algonquin for Advertising and Marketing Communications Management. Her ideal pathway is to work for the government on the creative side, making advertisements and working in the Canadian Motocross Industry. She had six years of experience working for motocross tracks all over the Ottawa Valley, from social media postings to database entries. She has a passion for outdoor sports such as hunting and fishing, and she loves dancing.

Danica Maiorino – Copywriter and Graphic Designer

Danica is in her second year of Marketing Communications Management at Algonquin College. She is an R&B/Soul singer and songwriter and was born and raised by her bilingual family in Ottawa. She has experience in content creation and branding, as she uses her social media accounts as promotional tools for her artistic alter ego – “Ivy Denza”. She has recently had the opportunity to travel to Cuba about twelve times within the last two years. This has allowed her to become a fluent Spanish speaker and given her a new perspective on the world and the advertising industry.

Digital Team

Keely Tierney – Director of E-News

Keely is a second-year student in the Advertising and Marketing Communications Management program. Keely also has a Bachelor’s in Criminology with a minor in Law from Carleton University. Her ideal pathway in the industry is to work on the client-side, specifically in event marketing. She would also like to work in the funeral industry. In her spare time, Keely does embroidery.  This year she wants to focus on increasing the number of subscribers to the Algonquin Times e-newsletter.

Raphaela Widjaja – Digital Director – Website

Raphaela is in her second year of Advertising and Marketing Communications Management at Algonquin College. Her ideal pathway is to work in a start-up company or a digital advertising agency after graduation. She also works remotely as a content creator and project manager for an Indonesian start-up named Edu-Tech. Raph loves spending her time reading, watching shows or playing Among Us.

Lucas Grier-Beauregard – Graphic Designer and Website Editor/Developer

Lucas is in his second year of Advertising and Marketing Communications Management at Algonquin College. He is currently interested in more than one career pathway; these include real-estate marketing and photography/videography within the advertising industry. Lucas has been a photographer for a while and dramatically enjoys this practice. He worked as a photographer for JUMP! 106.9FM at 2019 RBC Bluesfest, where he had the opportunity to work among professionals and meet many amazing artists.

Social Media Team

Kaitlyn Gardner – Director of Social Media

Kaitlyn is a second-year student at Algonquin for Advertising and Marketing Communications Management. She is from Oshawa, Ontario, and she has always had an interest in design and creativity. For the social media department, she plans to increase the engagement and number of followers on the Times’ social platforms through her posts and content.

Nicole Sevidal – Social Media Content Creator 

Nicole is in her second year of Advertising and Marketing Communications Management at Algonquin College. After graduation, she looks to explore her creative path for work. She is a part of MAN (Multimedia Arts Network) in her church, which helps her practice her creative skills.

Maryann Herring – Social Media Content Creator

Maryann is in her second year of Advertising and Marketing Communications Management at Algonquin College. She has always had a keen interest in event planning, but while studying in her program at Algonquin, she has discovered other aspects of the advertising industry that she enjoys – like blogging and content creation. Maryann hopes to be able to lend a hand to the thriving of Canadian businesses, as well as build her brand through her blog. She hails from Kingston but moved to Ottawa for her studies. Her passions are travelling, the outdoors, and discovering hidden gems in her hometown. She aims to help contribute to the Algonquin Times website by keeping it up to date, informative, and user friendly. 

Events & Contests Team

Madeline Liska – Director of Events and Contests

Madeline is in her second year of Advertising and Marketing Communications Management. Her ideal pathway is to get a job in the marketing sector with companies to develop their brand persona, preferably in the Ottawa area. She enjoys travelling, and her dream vacation is to go to the Greek Islands and France. Madeline has many hobbies, such as baking and craft making, which lead her to this program. Her plans for the Events and Contests department are to create enjoyable and exciting virtual events that provide an escape from reality through entertainment and making people feel more connected.

Phuong Nguyen – Event/Contests Creator 

Phuong is in her second year of Advertising and Marketing Communications Management at Algonquin College. Although she is more interested in the creative side of things, she has not yet decided what she would specifically like to pursue. Phuong is very experienced with Photoshop as she has been improving her skills since the eighth grade.

Meet your Times Journalism Team!

The Editors

Andrea Sternberg – Senior Editor
Andrea is a first-year journalism student. Andrea is a massage therapist who is exploring what else she is capable of. She believes that it is never too late to change your trajectory. Andrea’s ideal pathway would be either editing or communications for an organization whose mission she believes in. This year, Andrea plans on continuing to reach a wider and more diverse audience, as well as engage The Algonquin Times readers to suggest story ideas – stories that need to be shared and that encourage people to think creatively and to take action.

Brett Thoms – Managing Editor
Bret is in his first year of Journalism here at Algonquin College. As Brett enters the journalism industry, he would like to work in the domain of independent media and investigative journalism, with a special focus on politics, labour, and the economy. This year, he hopes The Times will reflect relevant news for students that are in isolation. Brett is also actively covering the Algonquin Board of Governors and has been charged with creating awareness of the Board and its function for students at the college. He has noticed that the industry has room for innovation, and so he hopes to contribute to the rethinking of how news can be delivered.

Tamara Condie – Assistant Managing Editor

Tamara is a first-year journalism student. Tamara would ideally like to work as a radio, talk show or podcast host, as well as carry out some freelance writing within the journalism industry. This year, the main goal she has in mind for her editorial team is to convert The Algonquin Times into a paper that can bring students together, to help eradicate feelings of isolation during these times. She also independently hosts her own podcast and has been gaining industry experience writing for iPolitics, working for the Navy League of Canada in communications, and more. She intends to shed a bright light on the industry by contributing accurate and easy to consume news.
