Immunity Warriors: Invasion of the Alien Zombies

Multimedia design students from the college and The Ottawa Hospital unveiled Immunity Warriors: Invasion of the Alien Zombies. The new space invasion-themed digital comic book tells the story of the immune system and was presented to Grade 7 science students at Broadview Public School on Jan. 24.

The Algonquin students had the opportunity to collaborate in the completion of the comic book by creating a story around a complex concept such as the immunization process.

Dr. Kumanan Wilson, physician and scientist at The Ottawa Hospital mentioned during the comic’s presentation the important role that four college students played during the elaboration of the video.

“The four students from Algonquin College, two of whom are here, did an incredible job. In fact, I got an email from Madefire, the company that publishes motion comic books saying that this is one of the best motion comic books they’ve ever seen,” Dr. Wilson said.

Domenic Richichi, a second-year media design student is among the group of people that brought the comic to life. In an interview with the Algonquin Times, Richichi stated the importance of this kind of project for students.

“It was my first real-world project, I think it’s a great chance to show my work,” he said. “I learned a lot about immunization and vaccination.”

During the launching of the comic, Grade 7 students were given the opportunity to name the four main characters, the chance to watch the video and a hard copy of the comic book.

“I think it is a very good idea to educate kids about immunization in a fun and interesting way, I very much liked it,” said Alex Kumar, a Grade 7 science student. “My mom is a physician so, I already had some knowledge about the human body and the immune system but, I think this was a very cool way to present it.”

Xavier Lairgon is another student who also enjoyed the comic’s presentation.

“It’s actually pretty cool because I don’t think most of us would be super interested in immunization because I guess it sounds boring but the comic actually made it look more interesting,” he said.

Immunity Warriors: Invasion of the Alien Zombies is available in English through CANImmunize on iOS and Android, at www.canimmunize.ca or online at www.immunitywarriors.com. A French version will be available in the coming months.
