Formal heats up icy Saturday

By: April Luesby

More than a hundred students attended the annual residence formal, Fire and Ice, on Saturday, Jan. 16 at the Algonquin Marketplace food court.

The Algonquin Residence Council formal committee puts on the dinner and dance every year for the students in residence. Two years ago, the theme was Alice in Wonderland, and last year the theme was Masquerade.

This year, with help from the Student’s Association and the Food and Beverage department, they were able to open up the event to everyone. The students were only paying for the meal, which was $27 with a meal plan and $30 without.

“This is my second year attending,” said James Dormer, a television broadcasting student. “It’s  fun. We get to spend time together outside of residence.”

The ARC is an organization that helps students in residence voice their concerns, but they also also put on events like this one to help bring the students together.

“It’s the one event in the year that’s for the entire residence,” Barbara Keller, former ARC president said. “It’s booked way ahead of time so that anyone can get together and be with all their friends in an environment where they can just hang out and have fun, and they don’t have to go far from residence either.”

The students were also given a free raffle ticket at the beginning of the night. Some of the prizes offered included a 32-inch flat screen television, two tickets for tubing from Residence Life and the SAO, two laptop cases, screen touch gloves, and a gift card provided by the new Technology Store, a Chances R gift certificate, a Savoir Fair gift card, and Restaurant International gift cards.

“It’s the one big event in the year where everyone can just come together and hang out,” Keller said. “It’s always a really good time.”
